The "obsession" with food in memorandum reflects the shortages experienced in Czechoslovakia at the time Havel wrote the play. The constant references to food make much of the humour/absurdity of the play.

Saved by having a body.... I do think there's something to be said when our productivity is reined in by the ever-present body. Though, personally, when I race off at EVERY POSSIBLE moment for food, I'm definitely avoiding something. (Like the writing I "should" be doing just now.)

I think the relevant message in some ways is how inventive and resourceful people are (rather than be bored), but how the structures we live in sure do make it hard to apply that to any common good.

As one leader said during a review of a subordinate level of managers...."You can't train in initiative." "Yes," said one of his peers, "But you can kill it."

Why wouldn't food and drink be important at work? In principle we go to work in the first place so that we can eat and drink, right? But more than that, as part and parcel of the biological substrate of what we bring with us to work, our need for nourishment can function as a reality check on professional expectations and even an authentic source of resistance, it seems to me.

When I get hungry in the middle of a corporate day, I get a little message from the reality outside the corporate dream: time to eat, you dummy, despite the avalanche of busywork that tethers you to the corporate program.

Go for it! ..... perhaps the brilliantly-worded email you sent to everyone just after the play?
